Getting my "Fall" on

The Fall Equinox is a few weeks away, but in the fashion world, preparation for the the next apparel season begins well ahead of the onset of the season itself. So, I am already technically "late" planning the Daughter's Collection Fall 2013 wardrobe!

As I wandered through the store with Laurel to pick out fabrics for the collection, I found that I was drawn to the lush greens and rich browns - earthy forest colors. And since I'm a lover of all things in nature, it should come as no surprise that I would choose these colors to start my Fall wardrobe. (Hmmm...when I think about it, I think that my color choices for my summer wardrobe were reminiscent of the ocean - deep turquoises, blues, etc.)

Autumn is all about the earthy smells and rich colors of changing leaves. Among my favorite trees is the magnificent Redwood. Though not deciduous, it's beauty can be enjoyed in all seasons, but particularly in Fall. Redwoods are conifers, which means they have cones and needle-like leaves. Their rich reddish-brown bark and deep green needles are right in my wheelhouse of color choices for Fall.

(These photos were taken in Laurel's yard in Fair Oaks. Lucky girl...)

With the cooler weather coming, I choose fabrics for the "basics" to start my Fall wardrobe - a lightweight jacket, tailored slacks, a wrap skirt to wear with tights and boots and a simple blouse.

It's a good start to the Daughter's Collection, Fall 2013, wouldn't you agree?

Things are already starting to come together in Laurel's "Sewing Factory"  We got off to a rocky start on the Fall collection with the myriad of August machine problems and blow-ups. She's definitely back on track - read about it on Laurel's Quill. I love Laurel's tenacity...after a couple of meltdowns, she started on the boiled wool jacket (watch for a future blog on boiled wool) and she whipped out the Mixit Top from The Sewing Workshop.

Silk, especially the fabric with lycra in it, can be a little tricky to sew.  It's slippery, so to speak, and keeping it in control while sewing is not for the faint of heart.  That's why you should choose a simple pattern if it's your first time sewing stretch silk.

Love this little blouse.

After a little vacation hiatus, I'm back on track too. Stay tuned in for more of my Fall collection and fabric buying adventures!

  1. I like the way Laurel positioned the print around the neck of the blouse. It is gorgeous.

  3. I love the colors you have chosen, and to have a plan like that, WOW.. I wander through fabric stores with no plan, just waiting for a fabric to jump out at me, and there is always at least one that does, I hurry to the cutting table, sure that I will have a use for it. Since there is 'NO' plan I just buy a huge piece, and rush home to add it to my ever growing fabric stash, hoping that one day I will see the perfect pattern for it. Yes, I am a fabric hoarder! I need help, serious, serious help.. :-)

    1. Thanks! It sure helps having a great store like Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics in Berkeley to play in! It would be super challenging to not have a large selection of fashion fabrics in various colors and textures to choose from. I also love exploring all the choices in styles available in today's pattern lines. Then the magic happens of combining a style that fits with just that right fabric. This is actually my inspiration for this blog and creating a collection of "Daughter's Choice". I want to show how much fun it is to build a wardrobe with great style and quality fabrics. I hope that this will help you and many to jump in one or two garments at a time and begin building a wardrobe of your dreams. Begin with some of the fabric in your stash and find a great pattern to make. If you want any swatches of fabric for a pattern let me know. If you are in the Bay Area, come on by Stonemountain and treat yourself! My favorite people of fabric hoarders and lovers!
